Just like in humans, glucosamine has shown great effect as a supplement in horses. Glucosamine is a key molecule used in the formation of cartilage in joints. Glucosamine is used to manufacture glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are combinations of proteins and sugars, and are found in a variety of tissues, including blood plasma, joints, and the mucosal (mucous membrane) lining of a variety of organs, including the gastrointestinal tract and the bladder.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), which is a substance that attaches to collagen and elastin to form cartilage. HA not only helps keep the cartilage that cushions joints strong and flexible, but also helps increase supplies of joint-lubricating synovial fluid.
Clinical studies have shown glucosamine supplementation to be extremely effective in the reduction of DJD (degenerative joint disease in horses), osteoarthritis and other joint related illness.
Glucosamine supplements helps to manufacture more HA which deliver nutrients to cells and carry toxins from cells that do not have a blood supply, such as those found in cartilage; without adequate amounts of HA, the joints will become brittle and deteriorate.
MSM is a naturally occurring, organic, bio-available sulphur compound and is recognised as the richest source of organic sulphur available to animals. MSM is found in fruits, vegetables, but cooking and modern food preparation techniques deteriorate the percentage of natural MSM. The other source of MSM is derived from DMSO produced by planktons in the sea and through oxidation in the atmosphere, the starting DMSO are converted to MSM.
Sulphur is the 4th most abundant mineral in all living organisms, and as such you can start to appreciate its benefits in terms of supplementation. Sulphur is vital in the creation of tissue and the regeneration of cells, and is stored in the body as MSM. MSM is found in every cell in the body, and the average body contains about 4lb of sulphur as body weight (MSM) which is then used and broken down as a direct store for sulphur.
Key benefits of MSM/Glucosamine.
Equivet Animal Care MSM/Glucosamine is 99.9% pure and is free from any impurities, smells or colour and has been tested to ensure that it is of the best quality. Equivet glucosamine supplement is made using glucosamine HCL as opposed to glucosamine sulphate due to the added sodium content in glucosamine sulphate, and we feel that this combined with other feed rations might increase overall sodium levels.
We are directly involved in the sourcing of raw ingredients used in our supplements, and chose the best quality ingredients that are ecologically sourced and free from contaminants.
