MSM is a naturally occurring, organic, bio-available sulphur compound and is recognised as the richest source of organic sulphur available to animals. MSM is found in fruits, vegetables, but cooking and modern food preparation techniques deteriorate the percentage of natural MSM. The other source of MSM is derived from DMSO produced by planktons in the sea and through oxidation in the atmosphere, the starting DMSO are converted to MSM.

Sulphur is the 4th most abundant mineral in all living organisms, and as such you can start to appreciate its benefits in terms of supplementation. Sulphur is vital in the creation of tissue and the regeneration of cells, and is stored in the body as MSM. MSM is found in every cell in the body, and the average body contains about 4lb of sulphur as body weight (MSM) which is then used and broken down as a direct store for sulphur.

Why use MSM instead of DMSO?

DMSO has a strong fishy smell and can cause some allergic reactions like reddening and itching of the skin, Shortness of breath, nasal congestion, excess intestinal gas, as DMSO is the precursor to MSM, it can have a yellow colour and you can smell the sulphur in it.

But MSM is an odourless, white crystallised compound that is bitter to taste, and does not produce any allergic reactions.

What Happens when the body does not get enough Sulphur?

Sulphur deficiencies can have numerous detrimental effects on the body like an inability to replace/repair damages cells fast enough. This leads to the production of abnormal cells that may lead to illness and/or disease. The body will also experience an increased sensitivity to pain.

Sulphur deficiencies are also associated with gastrointestinal problems, a poor immune system, arthritis, and rheumatism, memory loss and acne. It can also lead to brittle nails and hair, dermatological problems and dry skin.

Using MSM as a joint supplement.

DJD (degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis), causes lameness in affected horses.

The condition develops when the cartilage that protects the bones of the joint is destroyed by age, injury, or excessive work. Connective tissues in joints is mostly composed of cells with sulphur bridges, it is this sulphur bonds that gives them their strength and durability. MSM as a joint supplement works by increasing the bio-available sulphur required by the body to produce new joint cells.

As a result MSM is a necessary supplement for the production of proteins, collagen and elastin, compounds which a key components in joint. Clinical studies have shown MSM supplementation to be effective in reducing the symptoms of DJD in horses.

Equivet Animal Care MSM is 99.9% pure and is free from any impurities, smells, colour and has been tested to ensure that it is of the best quality.
